The 5th IsDB Group Symposium, held on the 2nd and 3rd of October 2023 at the IsDB Headquarters, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, proved to be a pivotal event in development evaluation for the region. Under the theme, "The Future of Development Evaluation: Adapting to a Changing Landscape," the symposium explored innovative practices, lessons learned, and future strategies in the face of evolving global challenges.
The overarching goal was to accelerate development effectiveness by leveraging future innovations in evaluation. The symposium sought to enhance the learning culture, boost the quality and speed of strategic planning, support institutional readiness, and strengthen the IsDB Group's external credibility. It created spaces for debates, knowledge sharing on innovation, and promoting collaboration among evaluation professionals and decision-makers.
HE Dr. Muhammad Al Jasser, President of IsDB, represented by IsDB Vice President H.E Dr. Zamir Iqbal, highlighted the role of the Independent Evaluation Department in steering the IsDB Group towards development effectiveness. He emphasized the commitment to mainstreaming evaluation and adapting to a changing world. The President expressed confidence in the symposium sparking curiosity, provoking questions, and generating innovative ideas for transformative change.
The second day of the symposium delved deeper into topics such as the future frontiers of development evaluation in MDBs, the third decade of development evaluation in the IsDB Group, and the challenges and opportunities for evaluation in the coming decade. The speakers and panelists also discussed the IsDB-OECD initiative to standardize the Arabic evaluation terminology and localize the development narrative in the MENA region.
The symposium ended with a strengthened pledge to promote development effectiveness through improved evaluation practices, innovative approaches, and strategic partnerships. The event is expected to have a significant impact on IsDB Group's strategies and operations, making sure they are best suited to the development goals and wishes of member countries.
